Building a House in Thailand

Beyond the Bamboo Curtain – In today’s short story, Tim is rapidly learning how Thailand differs dramatically from America.

What are your experiences with Thai builders? Let us know in the comments below; other readers will benefit from your advice and views.

I saw Tim and Somsee for lunch today. Work on his house is progressing well. They’ve begun pouring the concrete foundation and raising the exterior walls. The men handle the heavy labor while the women pull carts loaded with freshly mixed concrete to the worksite.

The foreman watches closely, ensuring each block is laid straight and level. One worker began laying the second course before halving the first block, causing the joints to line up vertically—a mistake that compromises wall strength. Tim noticed and quietly informed the foreman.

He wisely avoided a confrontation and chose to speak to the foreman rather than the worker.

The foreman, who is conscious of his status in the Thai hierarchy, appreciated Tim talking to him directly. Saving face is paramount in Thai culture; status matters deeply, and no one wants to lose it.

Having emigrated from the United States two months earlier, Tim is quickly learning that interpersonal dynamics in Thailand differ markedly from those in the West.

Over the coming week, I’ll publish several true short stories I’ve been drafting—some set in Thailand, others exploring different themes.

Upcoming titles include:
• Is AI Good or Bad for Us?
• Rogue Police
• Do Thais Control Foreigners?
• Finding Your Religious Faith

There are now 197 stories on the MattOwensRees website. You can find them in the “My Stories” section. As always, comments are encouraged. Happy reading!

Author’s Note:
This piece reflects my observations while living in Thailand and aims to highlight the subtle cultural nuances that surface during everyday interactions—especially in collaborative environments like construction sites. I hope it sparks conversation and offers useful insights for anyone navigating cross‑cultural experiences.
